Life
The state of being alive. Life can be referred to in three
contexts: (1) Physical - the interval of time between birth and physical
death (Ps 23:4). (2) Spiritual - possessing
salvation, but still living on
earth, not yet in heaven (Eph 2:1). (3) Eternal - see
Eternal Life.
Lord's Supper, the
The sacrament instituted by
Jesus during the Passover meal
prior to His death in which bread (representing His body) and wine
(representing His blood) are shared commemorating His suffering and
death in our stead (Matt 26:26-29). It is to be taken only by
believers and replaces the Passover
meal of the old covenant.
Messiah
Hebrew word meaning "anointed one" (Greek word is
Christ).
Jesus Christ is
the true Messiah, Savior of the world (Rom 1:4, Lk 24:44-48).
Modalism
A Trinitarian heresy which treats the three persons of the
Trinity as a single Person who
has revealed Himself in three "modes" at different times throughout
history. The most common approach is that
God revealed Himself as
the Father in creation, as the
Son in redemption and as the
Spirit in sanctification.
Monarchy
Refers to the period of time (~1050 BC to 586 BC) when Israel and/or
Judah had a king. Can also be used to describe the type of
government during this time.
Motif
An important, repeated or unifying idea or theme within a book or
passage.
Mystery
A term (Gr mysterion, Lat mysterium meaning
"secret")
used by Paul to denote a truth of God's eternal purpose, not
accessible by human reason alone, which was obscure in the
OT but has now been made clear by Christ and the Holy Spirit.
